UNESCO anger at Pompei maintenance

Ancient Pompeii

The world-famous archaeological site of Pompei, included in the UNESCO World Heritage list, was recently inspected by officers of the UN Agency, who issued a damning report on its conservation.

Due to budget cuts, there is not enough personnel to manage the site and ensure maintenance. Dozens of ancient Roman houses cannot be visited by the public for the same reason. Many houses and palaces are ruined and are being damaged by vegetation.

The Italian Government pledged to start a 105 million euros project to revamp the site.
