Despite a perceived lack of promotion by the public Authorities, tourism is still faring well in Italy, with an increase of both Italian and foreign visitors. This influx gave some much needed respite to the economy of Southern regions, which are preferred by the Italian tourists and a part of the foreign ones, probably due to landscapes which have been less altered by economic exploitation.
The data were released by Europasia and the Association of the Construction Sector. The researchers, however, pointed out that the data refer to the summer period, during which Italy has traditionally performed better than its main competitors France and Spain.
Moreover, the good data are not enough to forget the terrific condition of the network of public entities which are supposed to promote Italian tourism. The National Agency of Tourism (ENIT) is in such a shameful state that its employees wrote an open letter to Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, asking for the Administration to be shut down no matter the consequences.
