LGBT rights win court battles in Rome and Strasbourg

In Strasbourg, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that Italy is under an obligation to give legal recognition to unions between people of the same sex. The judgment is binding and, at least in theory, it should be implemented with the adoption of the Government-sponsored Cirinnà Bill.

Meanwhile in Rome, the Italian Supreme Court ruled that a person can apply for a legal change of sex without undergoing a full surgery.
