Transsexualism and marriage in Italy

As the Government-sponsored Bill on civil partnerships between gay people limps along, the Italian Courts are more and more busy adapting the law to the cases of a changing world.

The Constitutional Court ruled that a marriage cannot be dissolved ex officio because one of the spouses changed sex.

More recently, a Court in Milan ruled that a marriage celebrated abroad is valid and must be recognized in Italy even if one of the spouses is a transsexual.
