Corruption scandal in Rome, Renzi’s party blames “rogue intelligence”

After a corruption scandal erupted in Rome, whose Municipality is administrated by Prime Minister Renzi’s Democratic Party, the President of the Party Matteo Orfini announced that he will “ask the Parliamentary Committee for the Security of the Republic to take charge of this issue in order to understand how the intelligence services could not detect the movements of a person they were monitoring” id est the crime boss Massimo Carminati.

Mr Carminati surveillance by the intelligence is not proven, however, and Mr Orfini himself cited “theories by the press”.

Branches of the Italian intelligence services frequently went rogue during the Cold War, but this is a very different context. The intelligence services are not supposed to fight crime, this is a responsibility of law enforcement agencies and District Attorney’s Offices.
