On Wednesday a car allegedly driven by a Roma teenager hit nine people in Rome killing a Philippine woman. The suspects have not been apprehended by the police yet.
The tragic event put under the spotlight the problem of the Roma encampments in the capital which are often unauthorized and considered a magnet for criminal activities.
The local population wants the Authorities to rein in the abusive dwellers, and the political leader Matteo Salvini threatened to “level” the encampments. Mr Salvini routinely plays the Roma card during his electoral tours in Italy since the problem is not limited to Rome.
In a signal of the growing unpopularity of the Roma minority, even the famous singer Adriano Celentano, which is usually considered leftist, endorsed Mr Salvini’s hard line.
