Italy bumps into ultra-conservative Hungary

Viktor Orban, the controversial Prime Minister of Hungary.

Hungary, a EU Member State admitted in 2004, is in the hands of an ultra-conservative Government which is sometimes suspected of being something even worse.

Italy mostly ignored all of this, but had to learn the hard way when Budapest stood against the Italian attempt to sort asylum seekers and refugees between the various Member States. The deal looked already concluded, but the Hungarian reaction triggered a similar resistance by France and Spain which added to the predictable “no” from London.

Meanwhile Andrea Giuliano, an Italian gay activist residing in Hungary, is being seriously harassed by local rightist elements.
