The Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi met at the White House US President Barack Obama. During his official visit to the United States, Mr Renzi invited US investors to Italy.
Ironically, almost at the same time the US company Whirpool announced that it is going to shut down its Indesit plant near Caserta, laying off 1,335 workers in an area which is already economically depressed and constantly at risk of becoming a fief of the local organized crime.
However Mr Renzi, immediately after its return to Italy, pledged an intervention by the Government, and there are success stories anyway, the most famous being the partnership between FIAT and Chrysler.
Sergio Marchionne, the CEO of the new FCA group, announced that the workers in the Italian plants will receive substantial bonuses related to the group and plant performance. Mr Marchionne’s offer was well received by almost all the trade unions, with the notable exception of the leftist Metalworkers’ Federation.
