Italian fish boat assaulted and hijacked off Libya

This night an Italian fish boat based in Mazara del Vallo, Sicily, was assaulted and hijacked by armed men off Misrata, Libya.

It is unclear whether the boat was boarded by pirates of by the Libyan Authorities. The seizure of Italian boats by Libya has been recurrent since the times of Gadafi, and after the civil war and the chaos engulfing the country what is left of the navy and coast guard sometimes uses boats without any identification mark.

Giovanni Tumbiolo, the President of the local Fisheries District, called the Libyan Minister of Fisheries (it is unclear which one, since in Libya there are at least two rival Governments) who apparently knew nothing about the case.

The boat Airone has a crew of three Italian and four Tunisians sailors.
