Italy crumbling

A pillar supporting a highway connecting Palermo and Catania, in Sicily, partially collapsed, cutting the island in two parts. The newly appointed Minister of Transportation, Graziano Delrio, admitted that the damage is serious and the works needed to reopen the highway will last long.

In Ostuni the ceiling of a primary school crumpled. There were no victims, but it could have been a disaster. The school, owned and managed by the State, had just been refitted.

There are obvious problems in the public sector contracting system in Italy. The good news is that, at least, there was some reaction, with Pietro Ciucci, the President of National Autonomous Roads Administration, announcing his resignation.
