Italians are scratching their heads after discovering that the main sponsors of the incoming Milan Expo, having food as its theme, will be the US corporations MacDonald’s and Coca Cola.
Italians are heavy drinkers of Coca Cola, but they would never order it in a restaurant, while it’s a popular drink in pizzerias.
Many Italians, especially older ones, will proudly boast that they never entered a MacDonald’s, which is considered as synonymous to junk food.
Is there a bit of snobbish attitude in this? Yes there is.
If the works are not completed on time, or new corruption scandals emerge, or the Expo buildings remain unused and decay after the event, the US sponsors will be a minor problem.
