Commenting Mr Berlusconi’s acquittal, His Excellency Nunzio Galantino, the Secretary General of the Italian Bishops’ Conference, said that “the law can go only so far, but the moral issue is different”. H.E. Galantino echoed a similar stance taken by Avvenire, the official newspaper of the Conference.
Mr Berlusconi used to be an (embarrassing) protege of the Italian Catholic Church. Not anymore, apparently. The reasons behind the unusually brutal statement by Bishop Galantino could be found in Pope Francis’ election or in Mr Berlusconi’s green light to gay marriage. The small pro-Catholic parties still present in the Italian Parliament are no more allies of Mr Berlusconi; the main one indeed supports Mr Renzi’s Government.
