The news that militants claiming to belong to the Islamic State took the Libyan city of Sirte understandably ranged an alarm bell in Italy.
Just like Germany and Japan, Italy has a very pacifist Constitution and policy, but this time the Minister of Foreign Affairs Paolo Gentiloni took the unusual step of announcing that “Italy is ready to fight, of course in the framework of international law”. This probably means that a UN Security Council Resolution authorizing the use of armed force will be need. Moreover, in Italy any deployment of troops abroad is authorized by the Parliament.
In the meantime, Mr Gentiloni’s Ministry recommended to the Italian nationals to leave Libya without delay. The Italian Embassy in Tripoli is expected to be shut down soon.
