Italy, when an ambulance can’t find a hospital

Now and then you will read on the Italian news that someone died in an ambulance while the latter was circling around desperately trying to find a hospital with a free place available for the patient.

This happens more often in the South of the country where the National Health Service – run by local Governatorates – is less efficient.

Yesterday the unlucky patient was an infant killed by a breath crisis outside Catania, Sicily.

This time, however, the newly elected President Sergio Mattarella intervened personally, stating – rather naively – that he “can’t believe” what happened.
