Italy reiterates “no” to GMOs

The Italian Council of State, the country’s highest administrative Court, confirmed the legitimacy of the national and local norms forbidding the cultivation of genetically modified organisms in the country.

The agricultural entrepreneur who had challenged the norms in force announced that he will take Italy to the European Union Court of Justice. However the European Union, under strong pressure by some Member States, including Italy, has apparently abandoned its attempt to impose the free cultivation of GMOs within its territory.

The Italian public, which is fond of biological food and local productions, is overwhelmingly hostile go GMOs.
