Italian organized crimes “manages at least 5,000 restaurants and bars”

Moviegoers are used to seeing Mafia bosses sitting in their restaurant or cafe giving orders or receiving reports.

The Third Report on Organized Crime in the Agricultural and Food Business in Italy revealed that this is not just a cliche adopted by the screenwriters.

It is estimated that the Italian organized crime owns and manages in the country at least 5,000 cafes and restaurants to make business and clean the money earned from illegal activities.

This doesn’t count all the cafes and restaurants forced to pay protection money, a real plague which led the Italian Industry Association to adopt the controversial decision to ban whoever accepts to pay such money.
