Italy is becoming a nightmare for smokers.
After the first historical round of prohibitions introduced years ago by Girolamo Sirchia, Mr Berlusconi’s Minister of Health, the current Government is going to tighten the rules even more.
Smoking could be forbidden aboard cars carrying children and in other public spaces like beaches and parks.
Movies and TV shows could also be compelled to limit the scenes portraying smoking characters.
Mr Sirchia’s law against smoking was unusually well received and enforced. There could be the sensation in the Government that adopting decisions against smoking is politically correct and expedient. After all Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, after adopting a string of unpopular measures and obtaining little from the European Union, is seeing his popularity decrease in the polls.
