Italian Courts to review Operation Condor

The Italian Minister of Justice authorized the Court of Assizes of Rome to try 21 South American defendants for the disappearance of 23 Italian citizens during Operation Condor.

Operation Condor was launched by the South American military dictatorships in the Seventies in order to clear the “US backyard” from communism. Real or supposed leftists were arrested, tortured, executed or even thrown into the Ocean from military planes.

The defendants include high ranking officers and former Heads of States. In 1998 the Spanish and British Courts attempted, without success, to try former Chilean President general Augusto Pinochet Ugarte.
