Nobody likes working on New Year’s Eve, and this includes the officers of the Rome Municipal Police.
Probably as a sign of protest against some new regulations introduced by the Mayor, they deserted en masse their tour of duty between 31 December and 1 January getting health and blood donation leaves. Only one officer in four was regularly on duty.
The “mass epidemic” was noticed by the Chief of Police, who announced an investigation, but also by Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and his Minister of the Civil Service Marianna Madia.
Politically, the episode will favor the Government which has started a crusade to overhaul the Italian Civil Service.
