Are Italian highways too expensive?

For long the European Union has been accusing Italy of favoring too much the contractors managing its highways.

Despite this, Mr Renzi’s budget law and another Decree enacted by the Government not only prorogued their contracts for six months, but allowed them to increase yet again the tolls paid by users.

The newspaper Il Corriere della Sera reported that between 1999 and 2013 the highway tolls increased of nearly 66 percent. Needless to say, the Italian highways are not famous for their modernity or high quality maintenance.
