The Scala opening in times of crisis

The annual gran opening of the La Scala Theater in Milan took place yesterday proposing Mozart’s Fidelio with a modernized mise en scene without glamorous historical costumes. The public was quite sober too, with few VIPs; President Giorgio Napolitano and Prime Minister Matteo Renzi did not attend either.

Outside the theater the riot police was clashing with protesters attired by the elite aura of the event and the presence of Christine Lagarde, the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund.

The opera had a mainly positive reception, at least.
