Since Italy has no Italian-speaking former colonies, call centers had largely been spared the massive outsourcing experienced by the industrial sector. Call centers are not oasis of happiness, of course. The contracts offered to employees are disadvantageous and usually temporary, working shifts are heavy, to be fired is easy, cold calling is often involved.
And now, international competition reached even this sector. Eastern Europe has very strong economic ties with Italy, and many people there speak excellent Italian. So, calls centers started moving Eastwards.
Suddenly, what was Italy’s most hated job became the object of a trade union defensive battle. Today the Italian call centers are on strike in an attempt to stop outsourcing.
