The Italian airline Meridiana started the legal proceedings to fire 1,366 employees. The decision would badly hit Sardinia, the main base of operations of the airline. The Italian island has traditionally had a low economic development and was further damaged by the crisis of the coal mining sector.
Moreover the downsizing of Meridiana, coupled with the troubles of some maritime companies operating in the Tyrrhenian Sea, would weaken the links between Sardinia and the Italian Peninsula.
The employees are complaining for the inaction of the Government, which in Italy usually acts as a mediator in major industrial crises. There is a big rift between Mr Renzi’s Government and the traditional leftist trade unions, which staged a major protest in Rome today.
