Italian football teams charged for deployment of riot police

The Constitutional Affairs Committee of the Italian Chamber of Deputies passed an amendment to the Bill converting into Law an Emergency Decree enacted by the Government to counter the violence related to football matches.

Pursuant to the amendment, the Italian football teams will be charged for the deployment of the riot police during the match in proportion to their earnings from the sale of tickets.

The President of the Italian Premier League, Mr Maurizio Beretta, asked the Parliament to revoke the “tax”, noting that the football teams already paid for the modernization of stadiums (which in Italy are State-owned), hired 200,000 security guards and pay more than one billion euros in taxes every year.
