The Rome District Attorney’s Office started an official investigation on the testing procedures of pacemakers and other medical devices in Italy. The devices are supposed to be tested by the Higher Health Institute, an Administration supervised by the Ministry of Health. However, investigative reporters sent by the Italian State TV revealed that the laboratory supposedly used for the tests is in such bad conditions that an officer labeled it as “virtually non existent” in an internal communication dating back to 2010.
Italian public laboratories, including the ones owned by State Universities, have a bad reputation due to a chronic lack of funds, investments and maintenance. The Italian National Health Service, managed partly by the State and part by Regional Governments, is still considered a national pride, however.
