Italian Embassy last stronghold in Tripoli

The Italian Embassy in Tripoli is the only one still operating in the Libyan capital and is being used by the different militias as a neutral ground for negotiations, the Italian newspaper La Stampa reports.

Italy was the Colonial Power of Libya until World War II, when the territory was lost to Anglo-American forces and then declared independent by the United Nations.

Different militias, including Islamist ones, are currently fighting in Italy, forcing the Parliament to relocate to Tobruk.

The Libyan anarchy is making more and more difficult the management of the Sicily Channel, a favored route for illegal immigration to Europe.
