Italy wants lower VAT on ebooks

Italian Minister of Culture Dario Franceschini made public his decision to continue a battle which has been fought by various Italian Governments to equate e-books to traditional books and thus bring their VAT down to 4 percent.

Since VAT is a EU tax, the decision cannot be taken unilaterally by the Italian Government, the green light of European Institutions is required.

Mr Franceschini’s stance was praised by Italian economist Giacomo Lev Mannheiner. The high taxation of e-books within the European Union is depriving the Common Market of a product was demand is huge all over the world, MR Mannheiner wrote on the official website of the Bruno Leoni Institute.
