Jewish shops “marked” in Rome

Between July and August an unprecedented wave of antisemitic attacks hit Rome, with shops managed by Jews marked with swastikas, threats and insults. Among the slogans used the following were recorded: “Anna Frank a storyteller”; “Jews, your end is near”; “Every Palestinian is like a companion in arms, same enemy, same barricade”.

Under the Popes, Roman Jews were subject to tight restrictions, forced to live in the ghetto and to attend Mass. In 1943 the Italian capital was occupied by Nazi Germany whose troops, helped by the fascist Police, rounded up the Jewish population and deported it.
