Italy, the homeland of veto power

Former Soviet Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrei Gromyko. He was nicknamed “Mr Nyet”.

After many intervention to avoid its bankruptcy, the Italian Government is trying to sell the Italian flagship airline Alitalia to Etihad, the flagship airline of the United Arab Emirates.

However, the trade unions blocked the negotiations.

In the meantime, Mr Renzi’s Government is trying to reform the Italian Constitution to downside the Senate, the higher chamber of the Italian Parliament.

However the opposition, together with some dissident senators in Mr Renzi’s and Mr Berlusconi’s party, started a massive filibustering campaign which could turn the legislative proceedings into a veritable Via Crucis.
