Draghi stops Renzi

During his first audition by the new MEPs, ECB Governor Mario Draghi warned that new emphasis on flexibility can’t undermine the fiscal and financial discipline painfully reached within the European Union.

Mr Draghi’s words looked virtually a reply to Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, who is fighting a pro-flexibility crusade in Brussels.

Mr Draghi could have a real pro-austerity stance or be simply willing not to look too pro-Italy. After all, Italy has just assumed the EU Presidency and is trying to get an Italian High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
