Italian Police shows investigative ingenuity in solving cold case

The Minister of the Interior in person, Mr Angelino Alfano, announced two days ago the arrest of a man in connection with the infamous murder of Yara Gambirasio, a 13-year-old girl found dead in the countryside around Bergamo in 2010.

The assassin had left a DNA mark, but there was no match in the police databases.

Therefore, the investigators scanned for DNA profiles some nearby places of potential interest, including a disco where they found a partial match. They searched for relatives of the match, including his dead father that was exhumed, and concluded that the culprit was an illegitimate son of the latter man.

It took years of old school investigation to find the secret lover of the dead man, and then her son, who was arrested.
