In Piero Germi’s 1961 movie “Divorce Italian Style” a Sicilian aristocratic shoots the wife he doesn’t stand anymore since the law of the time did not allow divorce.
Divorce was legalized in Italy in the Seventies, but it is still a long and overcomplicated affair. You need a first trial just to be authorized by a judge to live separated from your spouse, then you need to wait three years and finally you can file for divorce. Another trial will start, of course.
Thanks to a Bill, the time between the two trials could go down to just 12 months, and even 6 months in special cases. The Bill was approved today by the Chamber of Deputies with such an overwhelming majority it should have no trouble in the Senate.
