Is there petroleum in Italy ?

In an open letter published by the Messaggero newspaper, former Italian Prime Minister and President of the European Commission Romano Prodi suggested that Italy should exploit its oil reserves to exit the economic crisis.

This sounded surprising to many, since nobody really knew that Italy had oil reserves. According to Mr Prodi, such reserves exist in the territorial sea and exclusive economic zone.

The Government didn’t comment on Mr Prodi’s proposal.
