Two dramatized narratives of the meeting between Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and German Chancellor Angela Merkel are circulating in Italy.
According to Mr Renzi’s supporters, the Prime Minister wooed Mrs Merkel, turning on his charm to get significant concessions.
According to his critics, he made a pilgrimage to Berlin to pay homage to the German Kaiser of the European Union.
The truth is probably in a the middle. The two Chiefs of Government made the presentations and had some diplomatic and polite chat. Mr Renzi explained his reform program and Mrs Merkel praised it. Perhaps there was some wider discussion on the long-term destiny of the European Union. The European rules binding Italy, obviously, stand firm.
