Italy’s memories about Crimea

Italy, usually a self-centered country, is looking with great attention to the crisis in Crimea. You will find highly detailed and documented reports in every newspaper. The Ministry of Defense took the unusual step of stating that it is monitoring the situation together with the General Staff.

Italy cannot ignore Crimea. For half a century, Italy was the front of Cold War. Moreover, an Italian expeditionary corps fought in the 1853-1856 Crimean War to provide the Government some diplomatic leverage against Austria, which was opposed to national reunification.

On his blog, the leader of the Five Stars Movement Beppe Grillo even compared the current crisis to the 1914 Sarajevo one, warning of an incoming Third World War.
