Turkey snubs Milan Expo, Italy… and EU ?

Last week the Turkish Government notified the Italian one that it won’t take part to the Milan Expo scheduled for this year.

The communication left Rome astonished, since Ankara had already signed the participation protocol and the relationship between the two country was supposedly excellent.

It is speculated that Turkey could be angered for the Italian decision to support Dubai instead of Izmir (the ancient Smyrna) as the host city of the 2020 Expo.

The lightheartedness with which Turkey slapped in the face Italy, the main sponsor of its adhesion to the European Union, tells two things: Italy as usual is not performing well on the international stage and Turkey is no more so interested in joining EU.

The long negotiations imposed by Brussels probably proved too humiliating for a proud country like Turkey, and the rise to power of the Islamist parties led it to drift Eastwards. Moreover, Turkey was unable to get a clear support from the West in the Iraqi and Syrian crises.
