The phony war of Berlusconi and Renzi

During the negotiations to form his Government, Prime Minister designate Matteo Renzi dutifully met Mr Silvio Berlusconi, leader of the main rightist party.

The two men enjoy a pretty good relationship, Mr Berlusconi being satisfied that Mr Renzi is “not a communist”. He praised him for his young age and in the past even offered him a post in his party, an offer which was rebuffed by Mr Renzi via an ironic tweet.

During the meeting Mr Berlusconi stated that he will be unable to support Mr Renzi’s Government, but promised a “responsible” (which in Italian political language means “soft”) opposition, with his party possibly voting some proposals coming from the Government, including landmark ones like constitutional and electoral reforms.
