Italian female athletes give to Olympic sports much needed visibility

Miss Tania Cagnotto.

Churchill once said that for Italians a football match was more important than a war. And indeed, the widespread obsession with the national sport leaves really little room for other disciplines.

Luckily Italians have another hard-line passion: beautiful women. Female athletes like swimmers Federica Pelligrini and Tania Cagnotto, volleyball players Maurizia Cacciatori and Francesca Piccinini, fencers Valentina Vezzali and Margherita Granbassi, basketball player Valentina Vignali are helping different sports to get at least some audience.

During the ongoing Sochi Olympics Games much attention will be focused on Italy’s sweetheart, ice skater Carolina Kostner.

Mrs Valentina Vezzali and Mr Silvio Berlusconi in the infamous “I’d be really happy to let you touch me, Mr President” episode. Mrs Vezzali later became a MP, but in Mr Mario Monti’s party.
