Mr Silvio Berlusconi, together with two of his lawyers, is now officially under investigation for the alleged corruption of withnesses during one of his trials for sexual offences.
The embarrassing official investigation, announced by the Milan District Attorney’s Office, is another obstacle for Democratic Party secretary Matteo Renzi, who is willing to negotiate directly with the Cavaliere to finally enacted some badly needed reforms.
Mr Gianni Cuperlo, the President of the Party, went so far as resigning in protest. He is supported by some MPs and many rank-and-file members.
Moreover, it was pointed out that the first Renzi-Berlusconi proposal for a new electoral law does not reintroduce the nominal vote for candidates, widely requested by the public, and has defects similar to those which led to the annulment of the old law by the Constitutional Court.
Beside Berlusconi’s one, all the opposition parties voiced their strong opposition to the proposal.
