Italian notaries try to regulate common law marriages

Common law marriages are not recognized by law in Italy, despite many proposals to do so.

On Sunday, Italian notaries organized an awareness day trying to promote “cohabitation pacts” which should at least partially redress the problem.

Italian notaries are self-employed professionals sanctioned by the State with the exclusive power to certify certain solemn acts (contracts, testaments, corporate statutes, etc).

Thanks to their monopoly, they are notoriously rich, but they suffered a diminution of their turnover since the beginning of the crisis. This probably had a role in their sudden liberal commitment.
