After a tragic accident which claimed the life of a German tourist in August, the Municipality of Venice is going to issue new rules for water traffic in Venice, especially in the Gran Canal, which will be under the eye of forty security cameras.
All boats, including the famous gondole, will need to have a placard and a GPS. Gondolieri will have to wear an id card, too.
Other boats will be simply banned from entering the Gran Canal but in certain hours. The Municipality is hoping to reduce by a half the traffic in Rialto.
Mayor Giorgio Orsoni would also like to ban from the city the controversial big cruise ships currently crossing the Giudecca Channel until St. Mark, but this decision must be taken by the central Government.
