Italy seeks redemption in Costa Concordia wreck removal

Costa Crociere is an Italian trademark, and so was the commander of Costa Concordia, Mr Francesco Schettino. That’s why the unprecedented sinking of the huge ship was perceived as yet another blow for the tattered Italian image.

Conversely, the successful completion of the first phase of the wreck removal was saluted  by many, including the Government, as some sort of national redemption.

To be true, at least one of the two main contractors involved is a U.S. company. But it also true that Costa Crociere is owned by the U.S. Carnival group…
