This night Cardinal Ersilio Tonini, a famous and revered figure, died in Ravenna. At 98, he was the oldest living Cardinal of the Catholic Church.
He was Bishop and Archbishop before being created a Cardinal by Pope John Paul II in 1994. As Bishop of Macerata-Recanati, he donated to the local farmers the agricultural terrains owned by his Diocese.
In 1991, he publicly denounced Silvio Berlusconi’s maneuvers to have some leftist journalists and comedians thrown out of State TV.
In 2004, President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi created him a Knight Grand Cross of the Order for Merit of the Italian Republic.
