The chief of staff of Home Minister Angelino Alfano, Mr Giuseppe Procaccini, resigned yesterday in connection with the Shalabayeva case.
Mr Procaccini personally handled the request by the Kazakh Embassy to start the operation which led to Mrs Shalabayeva’s hurried deportation. He left a letter expressing his bitterness for the reaction of the Government to the scandal and accusing Minister Alfano of having been fully informed of what was happening, contrary to what Mr Alfano stated to the Chambers of Parliament.
Mr Procaccini had worked in the Ministry for 40 years, serving as chief of staff under several different Ministers.
Mr Alfano, who also represents Mr Berlusconi in the Government as Deputy Prime Minister, apparently is not going to resign. He blames the deportation on some high-ranking officers of his Ministry. The opposition has proposed a motion of no confidence against Mr Alfano which is unlikely to pass.
