Pope reforms Vatican criminal law

Pope Francis issued a motu proprio aimed at modernizing the criminal law of the Vatican State, which should not be confused with the criminal law of the Catholic Church. The latter is mainly contained in the Codex Juris Canonici and provides for religious penalties like excommunication.

The Papal decree abolishes life terms in jail, strengthens the fight against corruption and the protection of minors, and introduces the crime of torture as well as other crimes against humanity.

Legal persons will become criminally liable, too.
