Italian gay teacher expelled from Eritrea

Mr Paolo Mannina, a teacher in the Italian Institute in Asmara, Eritrea, was expelled from the African country for being homosexual.

The local Authorities discovered that Mr Mannina had married his Chilean boyfriend in Spain in 2008.

Homosexuality is a criminal offence in Eritrea.

Mr Mannina escaped arrest, but had to leave the country in days, thus losing his job.

Eritrea was an Italian colony from 1890 to 1947. After World War II, it was annexed by Ethiopia, but became independent in 1993.
