Food is notoriously important in Italy, and food served to children is nearly a religion.
Therefore, when the teacher of a primary school in Milan used the social networks to complain of the school catering giving to her students ‘only seven ravioli’, the news spread very quickly, making the headlines on national newspapers.
The catering was provided by Milano Ristorazione, a public company and a subsidiary of the Municipality of Milan.
The teacher’s initiative was endorsed by consumers’ association Codacons, which announced legal actions.
Some commentators, however, pointed out at the fact that after the ravioli the children were offered also a second dish, in line with Italian culinary tradition.
Milano Ristorazione released a statement assuring that its menus respect the national and regional guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health and the local health Authorities.
