Yesterday the car of the Italian Consul in Benghazi, Mr. Guido De Sanctis, was attacked by unknown assailants using firearms. The vehicle was armored, however, and the Consul suffered no harm.
‘Tripoli has pleaded that it will do its best to arrest the people responsible for this vile terrorist attack’ said Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs Giulio Terzi di Sant’Agata.
Italy was instrumental in supporting the rebels who overthrew Colonel Muammar Gaddafi’s dictatorship after a bloody civil war in 2012. Not only Italy is strategically placed for any military operation in Libya, but it was the colonial Power of that country from 1912 to 1947.
Italy is therefore supposed to have a privileged relationship with the new Libyan Government, but this is not so evident. Tripoli, for example, has not discontinued the practice of seizing Italian fishing boats violating what Libya claims to be its territorial waters according to very generous criteria fixed by Colonel Gaddafi’s Government.
